Persona 5 Royal: Joker and Akechi's Top 5 Gayest Moments
浏览人数: 发布时间:2020-06-18 11:00

Atlus might not have listened to fans' requests and added a way for Joker to date male characters in Persona 5 Royal, but they did give us the next best thing - a very gay relationship between Joker and everyone's favorite pancake boy, Goro Akechi! So, without further ado, here are Joker and Akechi's top five gayest moments in Persona 5 Royal.

Start now advertising The clothing-swap

The moment during Akechi's Rank 3 event when Joker saves the Prince from some fangirls by running into a bathroom and giving him his glasses and fluffing up his hair is pretty iconic, but even more significant is the phone call that follows when Joker tells Akechi he'd be willing to wear his clothes in order to help him get out of any future ordeals.

Whether or not Joker's quip is a joke or not, Akechi takes him seriously, even asking him if he'd be interested in becoming his stunt double, informing Joker that he'd have to dress up as him. Though there's no dialogue option, Joker literally nods in response to Akechi's question.

In response, Akechi begins taking note about how they'd be able to pull it off because they "aren't terribly different in height" and he's "sure [his] clothes would fit [Joker]." Unfortunately, the conversation doesn't go anywhere because Akechi has to run, but there's something pretty great about how down the two boys are to protecting each other and how enthusiastic they are about wearing each other's clothes.

In Royal, each of the Phantom Thieves awakens to a third-tier persona in the third semester. And while the other members each have their respective awakenings in their own bedrooms, Akechi's happens at the Leblanc Café.

So why is this important? It demonstrates that, out of all the many places he has access to, Akechi considers Leblanc, aka Joker's home, as his own home. After all, throughout the course of the game, Akechi often frequents Leblanc with hopes of running into Joker, even putting up with Sojiro's curt attitude just to see him.

It also might be a callback to an earlier scene at Leblanc, when Joker comes home to see Akechi at the café and the Prince greets him with a cheerful "Welcome home." Joker has the option of replying, "Honey, I'm home." back at him, which has become a popular dialogue choice amongst fans. There's something adorable about the two acting like an old married couple, complete with the occasional bickering and fighting.

Sure, "hate" may be the opposite of "love," but actions speak louder than words - right after proclaiming his hatred for Joker, Akechi lists off a number of positive qualities about Joker and then literally pulls off his glove and tosses it at Joker in the most dramatic fashion possible. It's just like an aggressive tsundere who's too shy to admit his true romantic feelings for the boy he has a crush on and settles instead for just telling him he hates him.

Oh, but don't worry - Akechi's feelings aren't unrequited. What does Joker do with Akechi's glove? He holds onto it, even after Akechi dies in Shido's palace. He even goes as far as to promise Akechi he'll remember him and keep his glove as the Prince is about to die. If that doesn't sound like something a lover would do, then I don't know what does.

Let's face it - the entire reason Akechi was brought back to life in the third semester after he literally died was because Joker's greatest wish was to see him again. Dr. Maruki knew that the two boys had "come to a deep understanding of each other" and created an entirely new reality so they could continue their relationship. Loving someone so much that they survive death is a pretty common trope in romance, and Persona 5 Royal is no exception.

Additionally, what does it say when a god who has the power to rewrite the entire world decides to use his power to bring your rival back to life and give your relationship a fresh start? Sounds like whatever you two have is something special...

Two dudes, chilling in a hot tub, sitting literally right next to each other because they're definitely gay...

This moment, which occurs during Rank 6 of Akechi's confidant, speaks for itself; Akechi and Joker literally become the two boys from that one hot tub Vine. Except, instead of sitting five feet apart, they're right next to each other.

After they're done bathing and standing with nothing but towels around their waists, Akechi even suggests a competition to see who can change into their clothes the fastest. Remember Akechi's earlier obsession with Joker and his clothes?

Honorable Mention: "Small Potatoes"

Personally, I'm still a little sour that the "small potatoes" line was removed from the game, especially because there's plenty of evidence that the line was a love confession hidden behind an esoteric Russian proverb, but the line still lives on in our hearts. And in this essay analyzing this four-word line.
